Start with this check.

Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Note the Google account, last backup date and current state. Check space on the phone and in that account before restarting attempts.

Do not uninstall WhatsApp or clear its data while the backup is unverified. Do not delete the previous copy merely to start another. Preserve your access method securely if backup encryption is enabled.

In Chat backup, note the last completed date, account and displayed size. Confirm important chats remain visible. Stalled progress does not establish that the last valid backup disappeared.

Use Wi-Fi that actually reaches the Internet and maintain sufficient power. Avoid switching networks mid-backup. Record the current attempt before comparing another connection.

Check official updates for WhatsApp and Google Play services. Keep permission or account error wording and consult that branch of official help. Review data and access before considering account removal.

Confirm a completed backup

After addressing the identified condition, start backing up the chats to preserve and allow completion. Reopen Chat backup and confirm the completed date changed under the intended account.

Record date and account before switching phones. A disappearing progress bar alone is insufficient reason to erase the source.

When to stop and ask for help

For persistent failure, preserve WhatsApp and its data and contact support with the warning, date and conditions. Never send login codes, encrypted-backup credentials or entire private conversations.

Does 99% prove the backup is saved?

No. Verify the completed backup date.

Can I delete the old backup to gain space?

You might lose the only usable copy. Review alternatives and chat state before deciding.

Does this cover iCloud?

No. It is limited to WhatsApp for Android using a Google Account backup.
