Start with this check.
Check the phone number and Google account associated with the backup. If the old phone remains accessible, inspect its last completed backup date without creating another copy over the history you need.
Avoid repeated reinstalls or an empty backup replacing useful history. Never share verification codes or encrypted-backup secrets. Claims to recover chats from WhatsApp servers do not establish that a service can do so.

Identify the chat source
Record whether chats came from Android, iPhone or a lost device. An iCloud copy does not appear as a Google backup. Use the relevant migration guide when switching systems.
No Google copy does not establish loss if chats remain on the source phone.
Verify account and number together
Check the Google account and WhatsApp number used when the backup was created. Compare current setup without publishing those details. Resolve missing account or number access through official providers.
Random account attempts and repeated reinstalls do not identify a backup.
Check the date on an available source
On the old phone, open Chats → Chat backup and read the last completed date. Establish whether the wanted chats existed then. Avoid creating another copy when trying to preserve earlier history containing now-deleted chats.
A backup older than a wanted message cannot contain that message.
Read the restoration blocker
Separate not found, insufficient space and an encryption-access request. Keep the message and review its matching WhatsApp help section. Account credentials do not necessarily replace an encrypted backup’s access method.
Do not send secrets to a supposed technician. Identify which access is missing.
Plan a retry without losing new content
WhatsApp documents restoration during initial setup rather than a Restore button in Settings. Before reinstalling to retry, preserve recent data and verify backup and credentials. Ask support if both states cannot be preserved.
Do not assume restoration will automatically combine old history and new conversations.
When to stop and ask for help
Without a usable copy or accessible source, do not promise recovery. WhatsApp explains it cannot restore chats for you from its servers. Preserve available files and devices before experimenting.

Can I choose any older Google copy?
WhatsApp says a new backup under the same account replaces the previous one. Do not assume version history.
Does moving from iPhone use this restoration?
It requires a supported cross-platform transfer, not finding iCloud as a Google backup.
