Start with this check.

Open WhatsApp Settings → Storage and data. Review downloads on mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming; uncheck videos or other types you prefer to download manually. Then use Manage storage to review large files, saving important ones to your computer first.

Deleting a file may stop it opening from its message. Do not assume you can download it again or that a future backup will retain deleted media. Avoid Clear chat, Delete chat and clearing the app data when you only want to remove a few videos.

Identify which storage is full

Compare Android Settings → Storage with your Google Account storage indicator. WhatsApp can occupy space on the phone and in its Google backup. Note which one shows the warning before deleting anything.

What to look for

Limit future downloads

In WhatsApp open Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. Review When using mobile data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming. Uncheck videos and any other types you want to download only when you tap them, then confirm each change.

What to look for

Changing mobile data alone leaves Wi-Fi downloads governed by their previous setting. Start with videos if you want photos to remain convenient.

Separate downloading from gallery visibility

Hiding media from the gallery does not stop downloads or recover storage. Use the previous setting to control future downloads; review existing files through the storage manager.

Muting a group does not mean deleting its videos either. Compare actual storage before and after cleaning.

Save anything you cannot afford to lose

What to look for

Open the computer copies and play videos at several points. Keep another independent copy of irreplaceable memories. Copying media files does not create a restorable backup of your conversations.

Review large files and groups

Open WhatsApp Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage. Review the largest files and conversations; presentation may vary with the version. Open items before selecting several.

What to look for

Start with one disposable video and check what disappears. Avoid selecting everything out of habit: a small document may matter more than a large video.

Delete only the reviewed selection

Use file deletion in the storage manager and read its confirmation. You do not need to delete an entire conversation to remove selected media. Check whether the confirmation also offers to delete other copies of the same item.

What to look for

Copies saved in other folders can still take up space. Avoid bulk gallery deletions when it syncs to a cloud account: check the scope of deletion first.

Review Google backup if that is full too

If you accept leaving videos out of future WhatsApp backups, review Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Include videos. Save the videos you need separately before changing your backup plan.

What to look for

This affects the backup; it does not remove videos from the phone. Do not start by deleting your Google backup: it may be your only way to restore conversations.

Check the result and repeat a small review

Note the free space after cleaning and check whether videos build up again over the following days. When a new video arrives over Wi-Fi, check whether it waits for you to choose to download it.

What to look for

Do not treat WhatsApp backup as a permanent historical archive: a new backup can replace the previous one. Keep files outside the app if you want to retain them after deleting messages.

When to stop and ask for help

If a file exists only in WhatsApp and you cannot copy it, keep it until you resolve that problem. If already deleted, review your backups before reinstalling or making a new backup that could replace the previous one.

Common questions

Does turning off auto-download delete earlier photos?

No. It controls future downloads; existing files need a separate review.

Can I remove videos and keep chat text?

You can select media in Manage storage without clearing an entire conversation. A deleted file may no longer open from its message.

Does hiding WhatsApp from the gallery free space?

Not by itself. Hiding changes visibility; it does not guarantee the file stops occupying storage.

Will freeing space here fix a full Gmail account?

They are different storage areas. Check your Google Account quota and the size of its WhatsApp backup.
