Start with this check.

Unlock Android, connect a data cable and pull down notifications. Tap the USB connection and choose File Transfer, Transfer files or MTP. In Windows, open This PC → your phone → internal storage and copy the needed folders to a PC destination.

Start with Copy and Paste, not Cut or Move. Keep phone originals until you open the computer copies. USB debugging, root and cleaner apps are unnecessary. Use a trusted computer when allowing file access.

Prepare the connection and destination

Create a PC folder, such as Phone-Photos-2026-09, and check free space. Connect the unlocked phone with a data-capable cable. If unsuccessful, try a known working cable and direct USB port without an intermediate adapter.

What to look for

A charging cable may not transfer data. Keep the phone available to respond to the connection permission.

Switch Charging only from notifications

Swipe down on the phone and tap Charging this device via USB or the equivalent notification. Under Use USB for, select File Transfer. Some devices show File transfer/Android Auto or MTP. Allow data access only for your trusted PC.

What to look for

Check the mode again after reconnecting. USB tethering shares Internet access; it is not the photo transfer mode.

Open phone storage in Windows

Open File Explorer → This PC and select the phone. Enter Internal shared storage or its equivalent. Check the SD card separately if you store pictures there. If everything is empty, unlock the phone and review its prompts before concluding files are missing.

What to look for

Folders should appear. MTP may display the phone without assigning a drive letter.

Find camera pictures, screenshots and downloads

Start with DCIM → Camera for camera photos and videos, then inspect other DCIM subfolders. Pictures often contains other apps’ images. Screenshots may be under Pictures → Screenshots or DCIM → Screenshots. Download holds downloaded files. These are common locations, not an identical layout on every phone.

What to look for

For an uncertain picture, inspect details or file information in Gallery or Files to find its actual folder.

Locate WhatsApp files

On many current installations, check Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media. WhatsApp Images holds pictures and WhatsApp Video holds videos; inspect subfolders such as Sent if needed. Older installations may have WhatsApp → Media directly under internal storage.

What to look for

This path is documented in a Samsung moderator response and can vary. WhatsApp Business, cloned apps and work profiles may use different locations. Do not force access to Android → data.

Separate local files from missing downloads

If a WhatsApp picture has a download button, check in the app whether it remains available to download. For cloud-only Google Photos pictures, the cable will not retrieve them: use the website or the Photos download guide. An item visible in an app is not always a locally exportable file.

What to look for

Copying Media preserves available media files; it does not create a restorable WhatsApp chat backup.

Copy and verify folder by folder

Select a folder or small batch, use Copy and Paste to the PC destination and wait for completion. Open pictures and play videos from that folder. Continue in batches, keeping structure to separate camera, screenshots and WhatsApp. Record unfinished batches if an error occurs.

What to look for

A completed copy does not prove you selected every folder. Check older periods, large videos and irreplaceable material carefully.

Finish while preserving the only copy

When transfers finish, close windows using the phone and choose Eject if Windows offers it, then unplug. Keep another independent copy of important pictures. Before cleaning phone storage, check whether deletion affects Google Photos or another synced service.

What to look for

USB copying does not free space by itself or require deletion. Keep the originals until you choose a cleanup process with verified backups.

When to stop and ask for help

If two data cables and another port still fail, consult the Windows USB guide and your model’s support. Do not bypass a locked phone or employer restrictions. For missing pictures, first establish whether they were on the device, SD card or a cloud account.

Must I enable USB debugging?

Not for the normal file transfer described here.

Does DCIM contain every photo?

Not necessarily: check Pictures, Download, WhatsApp, other apps and the SD card.

Where is WhatsApp Images?

Commonly under Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media. Older or special installations can differ.

Will copying Media restore chats?

No. A folder of photos and videos does not replace WhatsApp conversation backup or transfer.

Will cloud pictures appear over USB?

You see locally exposed files. Download cloud-only items separately.
