Start with this check.
Open Settings → System → Sound → Input. Select the correct microphone and run its test. If it responds to your voice, move on to app permissions and the microphone selector inside the app.
Run these checks outside a call. This website does not activate or record your microphone. Use the built-in Windows test.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.
0 of 4 checks completedMark each check to keep track during this visit.
Check the physical device
Check your headset connection and mute switch. If you have several microphones, identify the one you intend to use. A webcam microphone and a headset microphone are separate inputs.
Note the device name so that you can select the same input in Windows and in the app.
Test microphone input in Windows
Open Settings, System, Sound and the Input section. Select the microphone and use its test while speaking. If there is no response, check the connection and input volume before continuing.
A response in the test confirms that Windows receives audio. Focus the next check on the app.
Review microphone permissions
Under Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, review microphone access and app access. Desktop apps have a separate access control; not every desktop app has an individual switch.
Allow access only for apps you need. A managed computer may require help from an administrator.
Choose the input inside the app
Open audio settings in the affected app and choose the device you just tested. Check the mute control in the call as well. For a website, check the browser permission for that site.
Test again with only one calling app open. If Chrome alone fails, follow the browser permissions guide.
When to stop and ask for help
If the microphone does not appear in Windows, consult the manufacturer and Microsoft documentation before changing drivers. On a work computer, give the administrator the device model and the input test result.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Why does it work in Windows but not in a call?
The app might have another input selected, be muted or lack permission. Use the exact device name that worked in the Windows test.
Do I need a repair utility?
These checks use built-in Windows settings and do not require a separate repair tool.
Should I uninstall the driver?
Not as a first step when Windows already receives your voice. Check permissions and the selected input first.
