Start with this check.
First confirm that Windows receives your voice. Then open the website in Chrome, review its microphone permission and check the input selected by the calling service.
Only grant microphone access to a site you recognise and intend to use. Reviewing permissions does not require clearing all cookies or deleting your browser profile.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.
0 of 4 checks completedMark each check to keep track during this visit.
Confirm that Windows receives audio
Use Settings → System → Sound → Input to test the intended microphone. Note its device name. If there is no input here, follow the Windows microphone guide before changing Chrome permissions.
A successful Windows test gives you a working input to compare against the browser.
Check Windows access for desktop apps
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Review microphone access and the setting that allows desktop apps to use it. Chrome is a desktop app and may not have its own individual switch.
A website permission cannot overcome microphone access that Windows has disabled.
Review permission for the calling website
In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone. Review the affected website in the allowed or blocked list and change its permission only if you trust it. You can also review site settings from the controls beside its address.
Return to the calling site and reload it when you are ready to leave the current call or session.
Select the working microphone in the call
Open the calling service audio settings and select the device that passed the Windows test. Check the call mute control. If several apps are using audio, close the ones you do not need and run another test.
If the input works, keep the settings that solved the issue. If only one site fails, record its permission and selected device for its support.
When to stop and ask for help
If Chrome says the setting is managed, ask the organisation administrator rather than changing policies yourself. If the microphone stops working in Windows too, return to the system input checks.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Is allowing the microphone in Chrome enough?
Windows must also allow access, and the calling service must use the correct input device.
Should I delete all cookies?
Not to review microphone permission. Deleting cookies may sign you out without addressing the cause.
Do the Windows instructions apply to a Mac?
No. This guide covers Chrome on Windows 11. macOS uses different system settings.
