Start with this check.
Confirm that the email is already in the affected account. Then review Android notification permission for Gmail and the notification settings of that account. If an alert appears without sound, check its sound settings separately.
These checks do not require deleting email, removing the account or clearing Gmail storage. Change one option at a time and test with a new message.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.
0 of 4 checks completedMark each check to keep track during this visit.
Define a test you can repeat
Ask someone to send a new email with a recognisable subject. Note the time and the account it arrives in. Check the notification panel before opening Gmail, then find the same subject in the app.
If the email is present but no alert appeared, continue here. If it is still missing, investigate syncing or delivery.
Review Android notification permission
In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → General settings → Manage notifications. Check that Android allows Gmail notifications. The menu presentation can vary by phone manufacturer.
Run another test. Android permission is separate from choosing which emails can trigger an alert for an account.
Review the account and labels
In Gmail Settings, select the affected address. Under Email notifications, check which messages can notify you. If the missing alert concerns a particular label, also review Manage labels. Check each account separately.
Compare an email in Primary with the type of message that did not alert you. This can reveal a difference in settings.
Separate silent alerts from missing alerts
If a notification appears without sound, review Notification sounds in the account settings and check whether the phone is in silent mode. Test another email and note whether the alert, sound or both change.
Restoring sound does not require changing email delivery. Keep unrelated settings as they are.
When to stop and ask for help
If alerts still fail, record the phone model, Android version, affected account and whether the email was present before opening the app. A work profile may apply organisation settings; ask the administrator before removing the profile.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Is a missing email the same as a missing notification?
No. A received email can be visible in Gmail without Android showing an alert. Checking the inbox helps separate these cases.
Why does one account notify me and another not?
Gmail notification settings can differ between accounts. Check the exact address that is not notifying you.
Should I change several settings together?
Change one option and test a new email. This makes the result easier to interpret and unnecessary changes easier to undo.
