Start with this check.
Open Gmail in a browser, confirm the account and search for the sender across all mail, including Spam and Trash. If it appears on the web but not on Android, check syncing.
Do not empty Trash or delete emails as an experiment. If storage needs freeing up, first identify what you should keep or download.

Let’s go step by step.

Search beyond the Inbox
In Gmail on the web, search for the sender address or part of the subject. Add in:anywhere before the search to include Spam and Trash. Confirm that you are checking the right account.
Finding the message confirms that it arrived. Check its location before changing settings.
Check filters and forwarding
In Gmail web settings, review filters, blocked addresses and forwarding. Look for rules that archive, delete or move messages. Record a rule before editing it; you may still need it for other mail.
If you find changes you do not recognise, review your Google account security.
Check Google account storage
Look at storage usage for your Google account. Gmail shares that space with other Google services. It is separate from the free storage on your phone.
If the account is full, review what uses the space before deleting anything. Once resolved, ask for a new test email.
Separate an account-wide issue from a sender issue
Ask someone using another address to send a new email with an identifiable subject. If it arrives, ask the original sender to confirm the destination address and whether they received a bounce notice. Note the time and error code without sharing private data.
A test with a specific subject and time is more useful than repeatedly forwarding the same message.
When to stop and ask for help
If a new test also fails on the web and there is no visible cause, consult Google support. A work or school administrator may be able to review delivery. Unfamiliar filters or forwarding rules should be treated as a possible account security issue first.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Will reinstalling Gmail recover emails that never arrived?
Reinstalling alone does not address a problem that also occurs on the web. First establish whether the email exists in the account.
Will a rejected email arrive automatically later?
Do not assume so. Ask the sender to run a new test after the cause has been fixed.
Should I buy more storage?
First check whether storage is full and what uses it. More space will not fix a wrong address or an incorrect filter.
