Start with this check.
Confirm the same account and search the same subject in both places. In Gmail on iPhone, swipe down in Inbox. If that retrieves the message, compare background refresh next.
Do not remove the account or reinstall without preserving drafts and checking you can sign in again. Android syncing paths do not apply to iOS.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.

Check the application and account
Identify whether you use Gmail or Apple Mail. In Gmail, tap the profile picture and confirm the address. Open that account in a browser and search a unique subject, including other labels if it is absent from Inbox.
A message found under another label was not lost through a syncing failure.
Refresh manually
Open Inbox in Gmail and swipe down. Record whether the message appears, is delayed or remains absent. Repeat with another new email rather than comparing an old notification with a current state.
If manual refresh works, you have separated account access from automatic activity.
Compare connections without changing the account
Open a new page in Safari. If possible, compare Wi-Fi and mobile data, accounting for your plan and Gmail’s allowed data access. Keep the account and test message unchanged.
If only one network fails, follow that lead. Removing accounts would change another variable without explaining the result.
Review background activity
Check Settings → General → Background App Refresh and review Gmail. If an option cannot be changed, record its state and check device restrictions. Avoid enabling every app merely to test one.
Repeat with Gmail in the background. A successful manual test alone does not guarantee alerts on a locked screen.
Check version, storage and the next symptom
Update Gmail through App Store and review Google account storage. Save work before restarting the device. If email now appears inside the app, end this diagnosis and investigate alerts separately.
Record which action changes behaviour. If none does, the web/app comparison gives support a specific starting point.
When to stop and ask for help
For a managed iPhone or work account, consult the administrator before removing profiles or accounts. A sign-in error needs Google’s recovery process; do not share codes or passwords.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Where is the Android Sync Gmail checkbox?
This guide does not use that path. On iOS, review the controls available in Gmail and system background settings.
Does this apply to Apple Mail?
No. Identify the app first: the same address can be configured in different email clients.
Is an email missing in both places an iPhone problem?
That comparison does not suggest it. Search the account and investigate receiving before changing phone settings.
