Start with this check.

Open phone Settings and search for Default apps or Home app. Check the selected app and choose a system launcher you recognise. Then review the application behind the change.

Do not clear system launcher data merely to restore the previous screen: you can lose icon and folder arrangement. Avoid removing manufacturer components or work management just because their names are unfamiliar.

Confirm which screen changed

Press Home and compare with opening Settings or a familiar app. Check Settings → Apps for applications you believe are missing. Record the full name of anything installed just before the change.

What to look for

An absent home-screen icon does not establish that its app or data was deleted.

Find the Home selector

Search Settings for Default apps and review the Home category where offered. Google documents default app selection under Apps on Pixel. Other manufacturers may put it under Home screen; consult model-specific help if absent.

Avoid an advertisement’s restore-desktop button. You should be in system settings.

Choose a launcher you can identify

Read the available choices and select the system launcher if manufacturer documentation identifies it. Do not assume Xiaomi, Samsung and Pixel all use the same name. Xiaomi documents a Home screen launcher selector on certain models, for example.

Press Home to check the result. If you cannot identify a legitimate choice, pause and consult the manufacturer.

Review the former Home app

Once a known home screen returns, identify the downloaded app previously selected. Preserve useful files before uninstalling an unwanted app through Settings or Google Play. Avoid removing other apps merely because their icons look similar.

Check remaining behaviour

Restart normally and review Home, app access and a known file. If only PDFs still open in an unwanted viewer, review that default separately. Avoid a phone-wide reset to fix one file association.

What to look for

If ads persist outside Home, follow the advertising diagnosis. Changing launcher does not revoke every other app’s permissions.

When to stop and ask for help

Do not change a managed phone’s work launcher without consulting its administrator. For missing original components or inaccessible Settings, seek manufacturer help while preserving data.

Common questions

Does changing the launcher delete photos?

Selecting Home is not an instruction to erase photos. Distinguish it from clearing storage or factory resetting.

Is every icon change a malicious launcher?

No. Legitimate themes and settings also change appearance. Verify the selection and when it changed.

Should I install another launcher to fix it?

First inspect existing choices and the system launcher. Another installation can complicate the comparison.
