Start with this check.
Identify the exact app in Settings → Apps, preserve needed files and use Uninstall. Then review Play Protect and check whether the symptom stops. If Home changed, restore a known launcher first.
Uninstalling can remove data kept inside the app and does not automatically cancel a subscription. Do not remove system components or disable work or family controls to force removal.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.
0 of 5 checks completedMark each check to keep track during this visit.
Identify more than the icon
Open the app information in Settings and record its name and developer where available. Distinguish an installed app from a website shortcut. Preserve important documents or notes through a trusted export function.
Do not start by clearing storage: that could remove the information you intend to keep.
Remove it through a system control
Select the downloaded app in Settings → Apps and choose Uninstall. Confirm the name matches. If it is the active launcher, restore the original Home app first using the launcher guide.
Confirm removal from installed apps, not only from the home screen.
Identify a restriction if removal is blocked
For a disabled Uninstall button, check whether this is a system app, work profile or family management. Do not remove legitimate administrators or accessibility services you need. If ads block Settings, consult the manufacturer’s safe-mode procedure.
Safe mode helps isolate downloaded apps. Seek help before forcing changes if you cannot identify the restriction.
Review Play Protect and test again
Open Google Play → profile → Play Protect and run its review, keeping scanning enabled. Install available system updates. After restarting normally, repeat the action that previously triggered ads.
A clean scan does not guarantee absence of every problem. Combine it with observed behaviour.
Address remaining access and charges
If you accepted a subscription, review it with the service where you subscribed; in Google Play, check Payments & subscriptions. For shared passwords or granted remote access, review the affected account from another trusted device.
Removing an app does not undo exposed credentials or a payment commitment. Keep confirmation of any cancellation.
When to stop and ask for help
For returning apps, unknown restrictions or a still-unusable phone, consult the manufacturer or administrator. Factory reset may be a later option with a verified backup; avoid starting with erasing everything.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Does uninstalling cancel a free trial?
Not automatically. Review the subscription in Google Play or with the provider where it was purchased.
Is removing the icon enough?
No. Removing a home shortcut may leave the app installed. Check the system app list.
Can a recovery tool restore any deleted file?
There is no universal guarantee. Check backups, trash and what can actually be recovered before granting broad access or paying for a promise.
