Stop the activity producing heat
Pause games, recording, navigation or intensive transfers. Disconnect power if the plugged-in phone is too hot. Leave it unused in a ventilated place away from sunlight.
Cooling takes priority over timing the problem while maintaining the workload.
Record the context once usable
Note charging, hotspot use or content restoration. Record approximate room conditions, case and active application without deliberately recreating overheating.
A repeated association supports a focused comparison. A single warm episode does not identify hardware failure.
Use available diagnostics
On Pixel 6 and later, Google documents Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics → Phone is very warm. If absent, check software version and model-specific help.
Keep recommendations and warnings. This menu does not apply to every Android phone.
Resume a light task
Once cool, try a short local task without charging simultaneously. Observe ordinary use without combining intensive activities. Avoid stress tests to reproduce the symptom.
If unusual heat returns during light use, stop and report that comparison.
Investigate persistent consumption
If an app is associated with episodes, review battery usage and updates. Compare similar conditions after one change. Retain normal optimisation rather than disabling system services.
Record app, time and activity. A high percentage after prolonged use alone does not prove a defective app.
When to stop and ask for help
Contact support for repeated thermal shutdowns, persistent excessive heat while idle or physical damage. Avoid repeated charging cycles to demonstrate a fix.
