Do not use Format Disk for Mac, Restore with Disk Image or partition changes to make files appear: they can overwrite data. Avoid repeated attempts if there are unusual noises, disconnections or irreplaceable files without another copy.

Identify the format and prepare another destination

If a Mac is available, inspect the volume format in Disk Utility without choosing Erase. APFS and Mac OS Extended/HFS+ are Mac formats; exFAT works on both systems. Prepare a separate drive or PC folder with sufficient capacity.

What to look for

For an existing exFAT volume, check connection and condition: TransMac is not the format fix. A drive used on a Mac is not necessarily Mac-only.

Check reading, writing and encryption limits

TransMac documents APFS reading and HFS/HFS+ access. It does not write APFS. Encrypted disk-image support is reserved for the full version; this does not establish support for every encrypted APFS volume, FileVault volume, RAID or Time Machine backup.

What to look for

An encrypted drive needs legitimate credentials and explicit compatibility. Copying from its original Mac can simplify transfer when that Mac can open it.

Open the correct drive inside TransMac

Connect the drive and cancel Windows format requests. Identify its capacity and Properties in TransMac before opening the volume. Use Refresh Drive List if connected after startup. If elevation is requested, verify this is the publisher’s installation.

What to look for

Look for recognisable folders inside TransMac. The drive does not need to open normally in File Explorer.

Copy a sample using Copy to

Select a few documents and choose Copy to from the context menu, then the prepared destination. Check a picture, document and video where available. Continue folder by folder while preserving the source.

What to look for

Copy to avoids the extra temporary boot-drive copy that dragging can require. Record errors before copying everything.

Verify files from the destination

Open them from the PC folder rather than a preview of the Mac drive. Compare expected folders and preserve another copy of important material. Separate incomplete copies from formats requiring another application. Do not erase the source to resolve warnings about names, paths or large files.

What to look for

Copying an .app does not make it a Windows program. A Photos library or Time Machine backup is not the same as exported pictures or a restored system.

Consider another exFAT drive when a Mac is available

You can read the original on the Mac and copy files to another exFAT drive for Windows. Before preparing that second drive, ensure it holds nothing you need: formatting erases its contents. Keep the original clearly identified.

What to look for

Never reformat the source while it remains the only copy. exFAT can serve for file exchange but is not a universal replacement for APFS or Time Machine.

Does it read APFS as well as HFS+?

Should I accept Windows’ format prompt?

Can I run Mac applications?

Must I convert the source to exFAT?
