Start with this check.
Open Settings → Windows Update and record status, error code and KB update. Check for a required restart, paused download or the same update repeatedly failing.
Save files and a backup before repairs. Do not cut installation power, delete system folders or run repair scripts downloaded from forums.
Which situation matches yours?
Let’s go step by step.
0 of 5 checks completedMark each check to keep track during this visit.
Identify update and stage
Open Windows Update and history. Record KB, code, time and downloading, installing or restart-pending state. Maintain stable power for the laptop.
Do not treat every unchanged percentage as the same failure.
Check network and capacity
Load a fresh page and review free system-drive space. If Windows requests cleanup, preserve important files while reviewing disposable personal content. Avoid deleting Windows or SoftwareDistribution folders as an initial step.
Downloading without Internet and installing without space require different actions.
Complete a requested restart
If the desktop is accessible and Windows requests restart, save apps and use the indicated normal option. Keep power connected until completion. Avoid a universal forced-shutdown deadline.
Afterwards, check whether history shows success or an error code.
Run integrated help
In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update, or use Get Help as offered. Read and preserve the result.
Record an applied correction and check for updates again once.
Verify in update history
Check whether the failing KB is now installed. Keep any new code alongside the original and consult Microsoft’s matching instructions. Give managed-device details to the administrator.
A restart without a message does not prove update installation.
When to stop and ask for help
If the desktop no longer returns, recovery appears or an unavailable key is requested, stop and contact support. Avoid generic commands or a clean installation without a backup and recovery plan.
Does a step differ from what you see? →Common questions
Does 0% mean I should power off?
No. Separate a desktop download from installation during startup first.
Should I disable antivirus?
Not as a general test. Investigate the warning and involve the administrator for managed devices.
Does every code need a separate guide?
Not necessarily. Establish stage and conditions before using the code to narrow the next step.
